THE YEAR THAT WAS 2014

Wow what a year!!! As we approach Christmas it’s time to reflect on what has been a wonderful year of dancing, teaching and learning!

The start of the year we began with our move to a new beautiful sun filled studio in North Melbourne, leaving our beloved Brunswick studio behind. We have really enjoyed dancing in our new space where the creative energy has seen many a beginner dancer blossom into a Salsa superstar.

A few months into the year we farewelled our own superstar & hip hop grand master, Jc Reyes who we still miss dearly in our studio. His dancing and teaching has inspired many a student and professional dancer both inside and outside the studio. We will always be thankful to JC for his direction, inspiration and motivation.

This year has also been a competitive success with great results at the Australian Salsa Open in Sydney and Australian Salsa Solo’s in Brisbane. We are always proud of the efforts that each student puts in and we were lucky enough to translate these efforts into great results. The Spark Ladies, Brooke ,Amelia and Javiera receiving a 1st place in the state title and a 2nd placing Nationally, in a very tough Ladies shine category up against many of Australia’s best dancers. Also  1st place state and 3rd place nationally for Javiera and Gabriel in Semi Pro category, who again we’re competing in one of the hardest categories of the year. At the Salsa Solo Stephanie & Nathan had a wonderful result by taking out 2nd place in Pro/Am in Stephanie’s 1st ever competition.
The up and coming talent is outstanding in Australia at the moment.

Our performance teams, Bright Sparks and Spark are almost ready to debut their new routines around Melbourne and Australia which is very exciting. Our busy year has rolled on and we found a new venue for our Mad about Mambo monthly dance social at the Sokol Club in North Melbourne. The night gas been a huge success with Melbourne dancers raving about the gorgeous space, amazing floors, full bar, selection of music and atmosphere! If you haven’t been down yet you’ll have to wait for the relaunch in Feb 2015… but don’t be too sad, you can still check out DJ Nathan’s sets at events around Aus and at his resident night Salsa @ Chrystal room.

Only recently have we had the pleasure of hosting Boston’s own Mariano Neris II for the 3rd time and what an experience it was! He taught a series of workshops introducing new aspects to musicality and partner work that we rarely get in Melbourne. A very close friend of Melbourne Dance Hub, Mariano was also able to get his hands dirty coaching dancers from different schools in the lead up to our summer competitions as well as the World Salsa Summit the World Latin Dance Cup. Thanks again Mariano for sharing your knowledge and passion for this art!

Last of all our two directors have also had a huge year. Brooke is completing her Diploma in Pilates and whilst already a professional Pilates instructor, continues to fill herself with more knowledge on the human body and how to make each dancer become the best they can be! You want to improve your body, co-ordination, strength and conditioning, dexterity… Brooke has the qualifications and tools to assist you in getting every ounce out of your body to help in your dancing journey. Nathan has been busy on the long and arduous road to recovery from a major knee operation. Whilst being out of dance action he has focussed on increasing his dance & music knowledge, as well as coaching. With rehab a never ending process he is now excited to be starting his journey back to the stage and social dance floor. If you see him out, he doesn’t want to be sitting still anymore so be sure to shout out for a dance!

Stay tuned for more information on new classes added to the 2015 calendar and have a wonderful, safe and happy Christmas and New Year!
